Why do hard drives fail
Motor Failure
If the hard drive fails to spin up it maybe due to seized bearings. This is commonly as a result of physical damage from, for example, being dropped.
Electrical Failure
If the Printed Circuit Board becomes damaged it may fail to control power and data. This is quite often caused by component failure or a power surge.

The Read/Write Heads in a hard drive can fail for many reasons including general wear and tear and damage caused by physical damage.
